A non harming error (resultid 1862754) when showing the graphics from BOINC Manager 5.8.16:

No heartbeat from core client for 31 sec - exiting
Restarted at 93.08 percent.
freeglut ERROR: Function <glutTimerFunc> called without first calling 'glutInit'.
On the other hand i can see an 40+% increase in speed running 5.21. The graphics work fine and even the logo is shown. Pretty good so far.
hostid 16343 is running SuSE 10.2

First couple of wu's are finished and time went from approx. 17.200 sec. to 10.200 sec.
Like Urs reported graphics are OK (although they are a bit sluggish at my system) and all is shown.
Specs: Athlon XP 2600+, 256Mb, Kubuntu 7.04, Linux 2.6.20-16-generic, Nvidia Gforce4 64Mb AGP.

I'm running my first 5.21 WU: I confirm graphic is very sluggish.
Running on Athlon X2 5200+, 2 Gbyte Ram, Fedora 7 with 2.6.21-1.3228.fc7 kernel, GeForce 7600 512 Mbyte |

freeglut (screensaver): Unable to create direct context rendering for window 'setiathome_enhanced version 5.21 [workunit: 15fe07aa.24859.15205.5.5.217]'
This may hurt performance.
Thinking about it for a while and knowing that freeglut is the Linux "openGl" solution, I looked deeper in my configuration and found out that a "one fits all" driver was used to keep the Xserver going.
Changed that to a "generic" Gforce 4 driver... restarted the Xserver and things looked to be running better.
The screensaver was a bit faster, although not as smooth as it should be.
Hit the graphics button a couple of times... and after being finished I reported the workunit... no freeglut message appeared.
Well I'm off to work... ;-)
Maybe time for someone to make this sticky.

I thought I should report this for what it's worth
Workunit
three host all crunching the same work unit
found the following:
two (2) host: Windows/x86 ......... Spike count: 8 ... the two Windows/x86 .. were .. discarded ... and rejected .. I guess ?
one (1) host: Mac OS X/Intel ........ Spike count: 0 ... the one Mac OS X/Intel .. turned out to be the ..... canonical result ?
_host: # 1 _ 5304 ___ Windows/x86 ..... app .. 5.21 ......... Spike count: ... 8
_host: # 2 _ 14346 __ Windows/x86 ..... app .. 5.20 ......... Spike count: ... 8
_host: # 3 _ 10763 __ Mac OS X/Intel .... app .. 5.18 ......... Spike count: ... 0
Workunit
is this right ?
is anyone else seeing this ?
is this a bug in the ... Mac OS X/Intel ... 5.18 ... 16 Jan 2007 ... app ?

Where do you change the driver? In xorg.conf file?
I'm using nvidia drivers with 3d acceleration at the moment, but graphic is slow.
[edit]And as you can see in this WU
http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/result.php?resultid=1828355
I have no problem of freeglut errors, so I don't think that the two "bugs" are related each other.[/edit] |

Another graphic issue: running beryl as window decorator cause the black background to disappear! The background is transparent.
No problem with the main app 5.12: background is showed and graphic works nice. |

First I made sure that all drivers were present (Adept Manager - Kubuntu).
After that I went to System-settings in the K-menu and went to the section to adjust Monitor and GPU settings (tab Hardware).
First they were assigned to a plug and play monitor and a "unknown" card.
Changed those in Flat panel 1280x1024 and the GPU to Gforce 4 generic.
Restarted the Xserver...
Reminder: these are all Kubuntu "out of the box" drivers.
Using them did not give "full trottle" Seti graphics, but things were improved.
Freeglut seemed happy and that's what counts... ;-)
Things could improve more, I think, if I decided to use the Nvidia drivers that they offer on their download page, but to be honest I don't use the graphics from Seti that often. Most of what is done on that Kubuntu pc is done in "flat" 2D.
freeglut ERROR: Function <glutTimerFunc> called without first calling 'glutInit'
What causes this message..? I don't know. Maybe someone else can explain it.
