Well, it seems you were around for the rollout of S@h Enhanced, AKA v5.x, to the main project. We’ve been running v5.17 here for a few months, pretty well since that time; IIANM it differs fairly little from the current app in the main project. I guess keeping the poor old servers running has been pretty “interesting” for the admins; over the past few weeks there have been several outages, slowdowns and spurts of validation errors, a couple of the incidents coinciding with major server problems at E@h. Donations aren’t meeting needs—but that’s not new …

AFAIC the most important news is that we’re crunching fresh data from the new Multibeam receiver here; I guess it’s the splitter being tested as much as the app, because nothing has changed client-side. And the Astropulse app has apparently been restored to the queue, likely the next thing for beta-testing once Multibeam work is getting distributed to the main project.

..Hi Jim .... aka .... Digger :-)

a Big Wellcome Back -- to -- Jim -- aka -- Digger :-)

Jim , how did Grad school go and how are you ?

Hiya Everyone...

..Hi Jim
and
Hi Odysseus

I think Odysseus ................ covered the updates , quite well.

but just in case .................. some more information for you:

Hi Byron ,

Sorry to have taken so long to reply.

I guess my question is , how does the progress look to you in the crunching of - the data - from - Multibeam - using app 5.17 ? :-)

So far things look far better than I expected. The error rate doesn't see to be significantly changed, but at least it didn't increase. I'm getting close to having enough data returned so that I can adjust the thresholds, but that doesn't require a new application release. But I would like to get a new release out there that fixes the Windows 98 problems.

and is there anything new on the horizon , that you could tell us about ? :-)

There has been a lot of work done by volunteers (Alex Kan, Joe Segur, Ben Herndon, Simon, Tetsuji, etc) to optimize the code. I would like to get that optimized code into our stock application, but I haven't had the time to complete that project yet. Other (unavoidable) things keep getting in my way. I do need to compile a new application for the main project before we can start doing multibeam work there.

Astropulse is actually getting close. We have a working Astropulse splitter again, and Josh is doing test runs of the application. I hope to get it into beta early in the new year.

Josef W. Segur has spent many long hours , as an unpaid Volunteer , helping , Dr. Eric J Korpela , Project scientist , meticulously read through code to find , any bugs or problems in app 5.17 running Multibeam data

Yes he has, and he should be thanked again and again for his efforts. I'm going to be corresponding with him regarding the new builds to make sure all the fixes have been implemented.

And I should thank you for your generous support, and I don't think I've thanked you personally for the DVD and other gifts you sent in May. Thank you!

Eric

Hi Eric,

thanks for letting us know about progress :o)
A happy new year to you and everyone else actively working on and for the project.

And yes, Joe Segur really should be commended for his tireless efforts - though he does like to keep a low profile, he really deserves a lot of credit.

Regards,
Simon.

Best Wishes
Byron

WOW!

Thanks Byron for that VERY nice welcome and wealth of project information! It's always nice to have your friends fill you in on the highlights after you've been gone a while :)

I'm still plodding along through grad school and hoping to wrap things up once and for all in June. Good God, it feels like I've been in school for years and years now. Oh wait... I have! LOL. You know that old saying... stay in school. Somehow I don't think they meant 'forever' though. Not that I wouldn't if I could :)

We're finally getting some cooler weather here and I've found a few extra dollars in my pocket for the electric bill, so it's time for me to get back to some serious crunching here. Or at least as serious as my one little machine can get!

Thanks again,

Jim

Thank you, kind sirs...

Nothing dramatic about my departure, just had to cut bills there for a while.

Dan, nice to see you still have the Celeron D hard at work! I brought mine back to keep it company. Nice AMD you got there as well. I built my brother an Athlon 64 system over Christmas break since he was looking for a new machine on a tight budget. I was able to bring the whole thing in for quite a good price and was very impressed with the speed. Now I want one for myself! But alas, this old machine will have to last me a while longer :)

Pappa, sorry to hear that your wife is back in the hospital. Hope things get better real soon.

Dig
