BOINC is just more than I want to deal with. I ran lots of datasets for SETI when you supported a command line app, I could simply run it as a batch app and this is FAR preferable to me.

And how do you suppose they pay for that? The NSF grant is only for BOINC, not for Seti.

Seti-Classic it is dead never to return. See Why classic SETI@home is closing down and other facts of life by Matt Lebofsky who is a project administrator, developer and scientist, and has been with Seti from the beginning. Boinc is and will continue to be the only game in town as long as funding permits . Without it the whole project is finished. I sorry if you cannot accept and adapt to this simple fact. ____________ Questions? Answers are in the "Unofficial" BOINC Wiki. Boinc V7.0.27 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470

There is a command line version of BOINC that comes with every installation of BOINC. This can be used instead of, or in addition to the GUI for control.

You are forgetting that Seti is about Science, and the old program was getting fairly useless in the Science it was returning, the program had to evolve. ____________

BOINC isn't about science.. it is about an online competition for points and credits.

Once installed BOINC runs at full bore no matter what, even if you close the manager. Wow. It only runs at full bore after you close the BOINC Manager if you install it as a system service. Otherwise, if it's a shared installation or single installation, it should quit as soon as you close the BOINC Manager application. ____________

I am just a user, but will try to figure that out. I did the default setting on installation. If that doesn't work, please report back here and we'll see if we can locate the problem for you. All processing should cease if you exit BOINC Manager when not installed as a system service. ____________

What a supercilious tone! If funding is scarce, it seems to me rather short sighted to be so tart with a user who feels like leaving the project. I am certain that you will promptly correct me but nonetheless, I feel obliged to observe in text that the project depends on as many users' _free_processor_time_ as possible. This seems particularly ironic given that you present yourself as a "volunteer tester" ____________

What a supercilious tone! People come, people go. Classic and now BOINC are effectively the same. Some people like the Classic some like the current. If you understood the whole story, Classic was dead. It was either going to close, or change. It changed. There was no money in Classic, it was totally broken, and the fix would have cost more than changing it to the current iteration of the software. SETI itself may die some time in the future if there is not enough funding, but BOINC will go on because of the dozens of projects able to be done via BOINC. These boards are mostly volunteer based. The developers are busy enough keep the softwares, boards, etc. running which is why there are very few posts from them. It's just a handful of people who write and run this, only a couple of them are full time, the others are students, volunteers, etc. No one is getting rich off this, it is run as efficiently as it can with the money they have. Classic got a grant that was supposed to last 2 years, they were able to keep Classic around over 6 years. That has to say something about the way the systems have been run. SETI did what they had to, and nothing can change that fact. ____________

What a supercilious tone! That "tone" comes from the fact that you cannot please everyone. Some people simply don't understand BOINC, or have problems with it, and instead of asking questions, they immediately sound the death-drums for BOINC, using the old cliche "keep it simple" - when BOINC already is, if given a chance. Though all BOINC projects require as much free CPU time as possible, you cannot treat each individual as rare platinum because it will be an exercise in futility. It is simply impossible, and why even try? Even retail stores do the same. They have a niche market they are going after, they set their own rules and you shop by that fact. For instance, Best Buy absolutely refuses to accept any returns without a receipt. Not even demanding a manager will change this fact. It is the rule and all customers must abide by it. You can get pissed and refuse to shop there, you can even tell all your friends not to shop there, but the rule is in place for a reason. Sure, my above example isn't without it's differences from BOINC, but the main point is, SETI Classic is gone forever and not everyone can be appeased. They can either accept that it's gone or not - it's their choice. But it isn't going to change anything if they don't accept it or choose to complain about it (and they all like to complain about it, even going as far as speaking for some sort of 'majority' out there that they have proof of). ____________

Wow, yet another thread with members complaining about the graphics for Seti@home in Boinc! Gee, anybody notice a trend here? Yes. People just can't let go of the past. They wont accept that Boinc is not a screensaver, but a projects manager with some limited screensaver capabilities. Seti-Classic screensaver software has long since stop serving its purpose. It is dead. It wont be resurrected. It no longer exist. Time to move on. ____________ Questions? Answers are in the "Unofficial" BOINC Wiki. Boinc V7.0.27 Win7 i5 3.33G 4GB, GTX470

I wish to share my workload with my second computer at home without internet access and then be able to upload it back to boinc from my laptop which I can conect to the internet at work... why can't that be done? the credit go on my acount anyway so what's the big deal which computer does the work. One of the reasons that the developers decided to make this more difficult was that this is one method that credit hounds used to cheat in Seti-Classic. They would seek out quick running WU and replicate them on many computers sending the garbage data back to Seti. This created problems for the data base as well as validating the result. For this reason results now also require validation from three different users to be granted credits. If you search around you can find a few threads discussing how to crunch with a computer other then the one that U/D loads the work, but it is a pain, which is the developers intention. They may someday in the future ease this restriction when they are sure they keep control over these rogue elements. ____________ Questions? Answers are in the "Unofficial" BOINC Wiki.
