I know that there is a large number of people that are helping that never say anything.
Because of what we are working on "together" it is important to communicate "problems or even no problems."

What you have to say problems or no problems is Important. Please do not be afraid to say you have a problem or just "hello." Even a reply of "me to" is fine.

No one will look down on what you have to say. Many are Multilingual and can help to explain in many languages.

So as we have many exciting things that are about to happen MultiBeam to Seti Main and then serious work on Astropulse.. Talking about what is happeing is Important.

You are welcome to PM or email me if you have questions, that will be kept confidential (with the exception of sharing with Eric as the Project Manager). "WE" want Seti to succeed!

Starting multilingual.
Translating (freely) into german language:

(A.d.Ü. "me to") wäre nett.

Hope, Al, that i brought at least the sense of your nice post into the other language. Anyone wants to try another language?

For New Beta Testers

Welcome to Seti Beta, or in some cases "WE" are sorta Alpha/Beta. Sometimes the lines blur a bit...

Currently Beta is Not Set IT and Forget IT!

As we have been "cruising for a bit," a reminder about some of the things about Beta Testing... We now have more "Beta" work to accomplish.

Way back in the "olden days before enhanced" a group of people spent a great deal of time here and had Fun. There is no reason why being on the cutting edge has to be boring. One Notable Person took what was here and created the Seti Enhanced FAQ that is stickied on Seti Main. It was a lot of work to complete that and was result of all the hard work that many contributed here. Some people migrated here because they were treated with respect! At all times Please be Respectful!

A couple things that you should consider while Beta Testing.

* Check the Number Crunching Forum Often, "Prefereably" in the Morning, around Lunch time and of an evening. You Input Helps to Identify/Correct Problems, the sooner you can let everyone know the better!
- Things can happen fairly quickly and if you are not around for days then your absence can cause small issues and delay of information that would help identify a problem.
- Things can happen that could cause your machine to go into a "runaway" condition. Currently if you return 50 Bad Results you are throttled to 1 workunit/day until you build it back up.
- If you are going on a vacation, it might be a good idea to let work run down and let the computer stay warm with a "stable" project.

* A Large Cache of Workunits is not really desired!
- On Several Occasions over the last few months we have seen bad Workunits being sent.
- Recently as we had to abort workunits on the local machine, that affected how many new workunits you can receive. If you had ten days of cache... You could have several hundred workunits to cancel/abort (what a pain)...
- So that you know the 50/day Quota was created so that a couple of runaway machines could be stopped from wasting other peoples time and skewing results.

* Generally your Preferences should not have a Connect Every X.xx days set larger than .5
- If there is a change to the Application you should receive the change within minutes to about two hours.
- Actually .5 days can carry you about 12+ hours to get past the hump. IF you do not want the CPU to get cold then you could have a Backup Project (Pappa currently is getting beatup in 5 projects)

* Most do not display inline graphics for Credit...
- Currently, they slow the load time of the Forum.
- Some Use Photo bucket to Screen Captures display Problems, this is fine sizing becomes a bit of and issue... Caution, I can do a screen cap that is badly formatted/sized that will insure a 2+ meg download before you see what is happening...

* If you do not agree with what someone posts, or consider it too Noob a question please take a moment to consider everyone had to start somewhere... I personally would prefer that you said nothing, or remember when you first started out and that someone had the patience to help You... My definition of the Only Stupid Question is: You have a Question and the Person that can Answer it in front of you, IF you carry that question away UnAsked will you never have the answer?

* Many people hide their Computers in their Preferences
- What is Visible in your preferences will not allow anyone to go find out any personal information.
- What is Visible in your computer information will not allow someone to track you to your house.
- What is Not Visible in your computer information Can and will prevent people from answering questions. It also spawns another copy of this same discussion and slows progress determining if the problem you have is related to the Beta Application or Your Computer.

* Generally, or at this point there are few Optimizers that are creating Optimized Applications for Seti Main. This does not mean it can not happen, Joe and Crew are working a few things that will actually correct some issues and make the application better. Running an Optimized Application "because you can" is not really proper and when Eric runs queries against the results then the data he receives is skewed.
- MultiBeam Results due to Angle Range do not produce the same Credits/Hour, the current data will help him correct that prior to moving to Seti Main.
- The App_info.xml file being present can/will prevent the next Beta Test Application from being delivered, with the reduced Quorum you have just blown up the test of those Results.
- Astropulse is a Totally New Animal

* Generally, I personally do not go to Questions and Answers. I know that some check and reply and then send them here. Number Crunching is where people look for what is happening.

* Generally I spend a great deal of time here watching what is happening. I can let Eric know that something needs his attention, and there are others that also help to let people when something is going wrong. I have posted a public Seti Email address on many occasions and do check fairly regularly... So if you see a problem there is nothing wrong with letting me know. I can let him know, no matter where in the world he happens to be...

Overall, this has been one of the Best Groups I have ever been associated with.

Please Take a Moment to read Andy's Post in Astropulse... Please Read

Thank You

Pappa

I try and read the board daily, while I do work I am more likely to pipe up here and there. I do not just set and forget... I am hear reading the trials and tribulations.

I guess I am mostly lucky as most of the stuff I have done is mostly problem free. I am glad to be helping bring these new applications to the mainstream.

I appreciated Berkeley for all their work. The guys who wrote the original SETI, then helped create BOINC, SETI enhanced and now AP which we are testing here.

I also appreciate all the volunteer helpers, such as you Al, and many, many others who give their time to help better the project and help the other volunteers.

The new Q6600 really seems to like AP units. It's currently doing 2 of them.

Been posting at seti on the rumor post. Yes my quad seems to like whats going on too. Not too many trials and tribulations as I thought might be. I thought BOINC would drive me crazy in the beta phases. But look at it now. keep up the good work.
