A task that may have crunched for about 12 hours disappeared after re-starting boinc (it got stuck on time elapsed, 12m 04s with 10hrs to go) and when I tried updating I got this.... 30/03/2011 13:01:53 | SETI@home Beta Test | update requested by user 30/03/2011 13:01:58 | SETI@home Beta Test | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. 30/03/2011 13:01:58 | SETI@home Beta Test | Requesting new tasks for CPU 30/03/2011 13:02:00 | SETI@home Beta Test | Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks 30/03/2011 13:02:00 | SETI@home Beta Test | No tasks sent 30/03/2011 13:02:00 | SETI@home Beta Test | No tasks are available for SETI@home Enhanced 30/03/2011 13:02:00 | SETI@home Beta Test | Message from server: Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of SETI@home Enhanced. 30/03/2011 13:02:00 | SETI@home Beta Test | Message from server: Your app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of AstroPulse. 30/03/2011 13:02:00 | SETI@home Beta Test | No tasks are available for the applications you have selected. Any help to get back to crunching Beta will be greatly appreciated. Make sure you have 'If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications?' set to Yes. Claggy |

Thanks for the help, anything I need to worry about with the highlighted bit, as apparently the V7 (according to the results page) will use the SETI@home v7 Anonymous platform (CPU)application? |

The highlighted message is nothing to worry about, the reason you'd use an app_info is so you don't get seti_enhanced work, only seti_enhanced_v7 work, (there being no seti_enhanced_v7 switch, so seti_enhanced _v7 can't be selected on it's own) Be aware they'll be a new windows app soon, so you'll have to change your app_info to the new app when available, (the present windows app has a validation problem if the app is restarted, so best to make sure 'Leave tasks in memory while suspended?' is set to Yes, and try not to restart tasks.) Got Boinc set to leave in memory, and switch between tasks set sufficiently high enough for a task to finish when started. Thanks for the help, I'll keep my eye out for the new windows application. |

OK now the new application is out, should I alter my app_info file to this: <app_info> <app> <name>setiathome_v7</name> <user_friendly_name>SETI@home v7</user_friendly_name> </app> <file_info> <name>setiathome_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <file_info> <name>setigraphics_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <file_info> <name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</name> </file_info> <app_version> <app_name>setiathome_v7</app_name> <version_num>691</version_num> <platform>windows_intelx86</platform> <avg_ncpus>1.000000</avg_ncpus> <max_ncpus>1.000000</max_ncpus> <file_ref> <file_name>setiathome_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>setigraphics_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe</file_name> <open_name>graphics_app</open_name> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</file_name> <open_name>libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll</open_name> </file_ref> </app_version> </app_info> Thanks in advance. |

Yes, you could do that, or since we now have a 'SETI@home v7: yes' preference, you could just remove the app_info, and just select the preferences you require instead, Claggy |

Yes, you could do that, or since we now have a 'SETI@home v7: yes' preference, you could just remove the app_info, and just select the preferences you require instead, Probably very wise advice. In the early stages of an active Beta phase, applications are usually changed quite frequently. Linux is already on the way to 6.92, if it isn't there already, and Windows could well follow. Far more useful for testing if you let the new versions download automatically, and less of a PITA for you changing it manually every time. Best to ditch the app_info.xml entirely. |

The preferences page is now set for V7 and I've deleted the app_info. I'll leave it alone now :) Thanks for the help and advice. |

For the information of anyone else contemplating this: I recently de-optimised a computer at SETI Main - removed app_info.xml, and reset the project for good measure so everything was clean. I did so between tasks, and as Claggy says, made sure the completed work was reported before I messed with the system. Then, I stopped BOINC, zipped up all the WU data files I still had cached in the project folder, and put the zip somewhere safe. Restarting BOINC with no app_info, and clicking reset, wiped out all those data files, of course. But, with BOINC already running, I unzipped them and put them all back again. For the next couple of days, all I got was 06-Apr-2011 08:25:40 [SETI@home] [sched_op] Starting scheduler request Much kinder on the download pipe, and of course immune to any download server hassles :-) |

You'll need to restart Boinc too, (but only once you're completed and reported any partially completed tasks) I waited for the current task to finish, updated, then reset the project just to be sure and then restarted Boinc. It updated Seti Beta from 6.90 to 6.91 (It hadn't done so already for some reason): 09/04/2011 18:34:53 | SETI@home Beta Test | Sending scheduler request: To fetch work. 09/04/2011 18:34:53 | SETI@home Beta Test | Requesting new tasks for CPU 09/04/2011 18:34:56 | SETI@home Beta Test | Scheduler request completed: got 1 new tasks 09/04/2011 18:34:56 | SETI@home Beta Test | Didn't resend lost task 06no10ac.20209.3339.12.13.91.vlar_1 (expired) 09/04/2011 18:34:56 | SETI@home Beta Test | Resent lost task 07mr11ah.23742.7838.206158430211.14.252_0 09/04/2011 18:34:58 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of setiathome_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe 09/04/2011 18:34:58 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of setigraphics_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe 09/04/2011 18:35:12 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of setigraphics_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe 09/04/2011 18:35:12 | SETI@home Beta Test | File libfftw3f-3-1-1a_upx.dll exists already, skipping download 09/04/2011 18:35:12 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of setiathome-6.91_AUTHORS 09/04/2011 18:35:13 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of setiathome-6.91_AUTHORS 09/04/2011 18:35:13 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of setiathome-6.91_COPYING 09/04/2011 18:35:15 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of setiathome-6.91_COPYING 09/04/2011 18:35:15 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of setiathome-6.91_COPYRIGHT 09/04/2011 18:35:16 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of setiathome-6.91_COPYRIGHT 09/04/2011 18:35:16 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of setiathome-6.91_README 09/04/2011 18:35:18 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of setiathome-6.91_README 09/04/2011 18:35:18 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of seti_691.jpg 09/04/2011 18:35:19 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of seti_691.jpg 09/04/2011 18:35:19 | SETI@home Beta Test | Started download of 07mr11ah.23742.7838.206158430211.14.252 09/04/2011 18:35:20 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of setiathome_6.91_windows_intelx86.exe 09/04/2011 18:35:22 | SETI@home Beta Test | Finished download of 07mr11ah.23742.7838.206158430211.14.252 So, a clean slate, Seti Beta updated itself and will continue to update itself automatically without any further interference from me :) |
