I just returned to SETI@Home after a long absence. I'm presently running both the 'main' and Beta SETI@Home projects on my CPUs, as well as PrimeGrid on my GPU. Some questions:

1. Should I run tasks from both the main and Beta SETI@Home projects?

2. I have lots of WU on the main site. Can/will my accounts be merged at some point?

3. Any plans for GPU use by Beta? My trusty 8400GS/256MB card is slow, but it cares. So far, PrimeGrid is the only project I found that wants to use it (others tell me it's too slow).

4. Is there a Beta FAQ somewhere that I missed? I can't be the first to ask the above questions. And I didn't see them in the "Questions & Answers" forum.

TIA,

-BobC

If you’re attached to both projects and haven’t set preferences otherwise, you’ll get work from both.

2. I have lots of WU on the main site. Can/will my accounts be merged at some point?

No. As far as BOINC is concerned these are two independent projects.

3. Any plans for GPU use by Beta?

Not having any that qualify myself, I don’t pay much attention to those discussions, but I’m pretty sure the GPU apps on the main project were tested here first. No doubt they’ll be developed for the current version once the CPU code has been ‘shaken down’ for a while.

4. Is there a Beta FAQ somewhere that I missed? I can't be the first to ask the above questions. And I didn't see them in the "Questions & Answers" forum.

Or much else there, I bet … ;) Most of the basics are covered in Winterknight’s 2007 Please Read sticky post in the Astropulse forum.

1. Should I run tasks from both the main and Beta SETI@Home projects?

As you want, they're separate projects (though obviously related).

2. I have lots of WU on the main site. Can/will my accounts be merged at some point?

Very unlikely in my judgement, the separate projects structure works quite well.

3. Any plans for GPU use by Beta? My trusty 8400GS/256MB card is slow, but it cares. So far, PrimeGrid is the only project I found that wants to use it (others tell me it's too slow).

There's no nVidia GPU application suitable for "Linux 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.i686.PAE" yet. On Windows, the fairly limited memory of that card would restrict it to the 6.08 CUDA application which uses older versions of the nVidia runtime which don't use as much memory as current. In any case, there's no work for the SETI@home Enhanced applications here any more, though there still is at the main project. But there's a definite possibility there may be something for S@H v7 and/or Astropulse here in a few weeks or months which would use your GPU. That's most likely after the more numerous newer cards have support, though.

4. Is there a Beta FAQ somewhere that I missed? I can't be the first to ask the above questions. And I didn't see them in the "Questions & Answers" forum.

I'm sure you're not the first to wonder about those questions, but you might be the first to actually ask. There's no formal FAQ either here or at main, Q & A is supposed to be adequate.
