Few changes to science. This is mainly in preparation for v7 GPU testing. 6.98 (non-GPU) for MacOS should be appearing shortly.

SETI@home Beta stock applications

Are already optimized applications available?

Are already optimized applications available?

Optimised v7 apps have been tested here for many months. This final tweak in the v7 development cycle is actually to make the stock apps (which hadn't been updated for over a year) more compatible with the optimised apps - less likely to result in inconclusive validations.

The precise compatibility of the stock and third-party applications is being tested as we speak. There will need to be similar testing of the forthcoming stock nVidia application, both against the new stock CPU app and against third-party apps.

In testing here, it will be best to stick to stock apps again, for a while, to get the time estimates and credit allocations stabilised.

Are Raistmer's S@h v7 r390 still up to date to match well with stock S@h v7 v6.98?

Or are in alpha test newer revisions?

No, r390 hasn't got any precision improvements, r430 or later required for them,

Is there any place I can read about the progress?

I looked here and there and found a few members which let run still r365 and r390 with app_info.xml file ..

What will happen if results of the new S@h v7 v6.98 will be compared with the results of this old revisions?

(.. maybe it would be better if SETI@home Beta would not allow app_info.xml file for all members? If possible, only *special* members?)

...

Usually results will match strongly, some few rare special cases will be inconclusive and a small fraction of those could turn into invalid. The changes are slight. Almost all of the SaH v7 tasks for the next few weeks will be reissues with one or more results from older applications anyhow, so there will be many mixed comparisons.

I do hope that those running obsolete optimized apps will pay enough attention to upgrade, but there have always been some who installed optimized apps and failed to recognize when they should upgrade. If it gets to be a significant problem, a project can simply outlaw all anonymous platform apps. Finer grained control like allowing some selected users to run third party apps is probably impractical, BOINC doesn't have that kind of feature.

What could we do currently?

If one member see such an inattentive member with outdated applications, he should send a private message to him?

We should collect this inattentive members in a thread, that we know who got already private message?

By the way .. ;-)
For example PCs with a very high RAC still have outdated applications.

Hmm .. - maybe for the next time ..

Maybe the *app_info.xml applications* should be announced in one sticky thread, like it's done at:

SETI@home : Number crunching : Optimized Applications and Other Binaries - Read Only ?

So the members could subscribe to this thread and get EMail if new applications are available.
