Message 44575 - Posted: 17 Dec 2012, 11:06:40 UTC

I am running 5 computers connected to the Beta S@H project, 3 using GPUs only and the stock apps and 2 using the anonymous platform, primarily because I dislike non-optimized apps. I have received several notices that my "app_info.xml file doesn't have a usable version of SETI@home v7 large workunits." So I changed the preferences for one of the computers running the stock apps to download long workunits, thinking I would immediately be given a suitable app which I could copy over to the two computers with the anonymous platforms and app_info.xml files. Instead I received 68 (count 'em: 6 x 10 + 8) workunits being processed by the old setiathome_6.98_windows_intelx86.exe app downloaded 9/25/2012. Have a heart, guys. What do I have to do to be given this new app?

I'll redirect you to this thread:

Tests of SETI@home with large workunits.

Eric also says:

In order to speed validation by restricting variations I'm running a windows client only. Please no anonymous platform apps with sah_v7_big. If you don't know what that means, don't worry about it. There will be time for testing other platforms and GPUs later.

It is precisely because of posts like this that I started the New BOINC feature - Application Configuration thread.

... using the anonymous platform ... I dislike non-optimized apps.

For your nVidia cards, the applications being delivered as stock these days are Jason's x41zb builds, currently the most highly optimised apps available. Further optimisation can be achieved by running more than one task per card, and the new Application Configuration facility allows you to do that without using using an app_info.xml file.

At some point in the near future (possibly even today), Eric will be upgrading x41zb to x41zc, to fix a newly discovered bug. You will have to upgrade your machines manually to match - unless you switch away from using Anonymous Platform.

... to download long workunits ... the old setiathome_6.98_windows_intelx86.exe app ...

Yes, this is just a workunit change. No new app is needed to process the new tasks - and nothing Eric said in the launch news implied that it was.

What do I have to do to be given this new app?

If the tasks you have received are descibed as "SETI@home v7 large workunits 6.98" - nothing. You've got it.

If you got the normal small tasks - disable that app in your project preferences while you make your next CPU work request.

If you get assigned the large workunits, but they are immediately discarded by BOINC, you need to make a small edit in client_state.xml (as I described on Friday morning, in message 44526), to correct a typo in the initial deployment. Or you can just wait for the next batch to be released, with the typo corrected at source.

Thanks for your help. I disabled normal S@H V7 tasks in preferences (but not before I received 73 new small workunits). I will just wait until the server gives some large WUs to see if there is a problem.
