Message 53455 - Posted: 2 Jan 2015, 20:10:44 UTC - in response to Message 53424.

The question is: Is anyone even working on it?

During the holidays? Not likely.

This is an exceptional long holiday, HAL9000. Issue started on the 4th of November...

I was responding to a question asked December 27th. In the US most schools are effectively closed for two weeks for the holidays. Prior to that you & most everyone else knows they have been working on several other issues to just keep the project up & running. Beta, I would guess, is a lesser priority than the main project. Which would put minor things for Beta, such as exporting stats, very low on the "To do" list.

As I recall the Server Status was effectively broken for about 2 years for Beta. So I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for anything to change.

Here we are now at 2+ months without a stats export, which is now far beyond acceptable.

I am finished crunching here as they obviously don't care about the people who invest money to test for them.

You may think I am being harsh or impatient, but I really do not care. I have invested thousands of dollars to support BOINC projects and all I get in return are some points. It should really not be difficult to fix the stats exports, so I am left feeling as if this project just doesn't care about its crunchers.

I'll check back in a few months to see if they have gotten their crap together by then. Somehow, I doubt it.

Since the AP database is still in repair mode, I'd be shocked to see stats to export.

now the science database has crashed, and so will need rebuilding, Once they're finished moving bruno's services around, and fixed everything else, then they'll likely get external stats working, having external stats working isn't essential for us to crunch, that can wait a few weeks.

Claggy

In the meantime I am increasing the difference between the external and internal stats...

...And increasing the difference further and further.

I'm lowering the share for this to 0 (backup project, only) until this works again :-(

Thank you. As you may know you don't run this project to get credits, you run it to test software. Hence the Beta in its name.

I am not sure that all of the Beta users understand this. Granted it is nice to more machines out there to verify apps even if the users are not monitoring them regularly.

Your credits still accumulate (if they're that important to you), and when it is fixed they will all show up at the external sites.

So, is it not possible to turn on/update stats for a day? It's been a few months. I'd like to get my 100k registered at Free-DC.

That's a false argument. It's not either testing OR credits. It's both, obviously. Otherwise there would be no credits awarded at all.

When the Beta software crashes and doesn't report, Guess what? No credits! When the Beta software for each platform reports different results that don't validate due to a programming error, Guess what? No credits!

Clearly you don't understand "Beta."

It is not that the credit is not awarded, it is not exported. See the difference between the credit in my signature and that what is given at the left of my message. Or your own for that sake.

Not funny anymore. Export the data, it would be nice to get credit for 10 million cobblestones. Blah, blah, blah, it's for the science. You wouldn't exist without Boinc crunchers. The respect goes both ways, now get it done.

Exactly right! Spot on!

I have detached all of my machines from this project until they get the stats export fixed. I recommend others who also believe the respect should go both ways do the same. Three months without even an acknowledgment from the project admins is greatly disrespectful to the crunchers here. Even if some of the crunchers here don't care about getting credit for their work, many do.

There are far bigger fish to fry than fixing external stats, they aren't essential for crunching success, the stats here will still increment,
Seti Beta has been producing MBv7 work units that don't validate, tasks end up invalid, so no credits, someone needs to fix this asap,
Android now has Android 5.0, existing Boincs and project apps don't work on it, someone needs to recompile the apps,
Get them added to this project to test them, then put them on the Main project, Hell, the 7.28 Android apps never made it to the Main project, they're still on 7.21,
If this doesn't happen anyone with Android 5 will just error all there Wu's, So no Credit.

Eric, the only project admin/developer/scientist who hangs out here has many other duties, from writing grant proposals to his other projects:

Seti projects at Berkeley

Part of the problem is Money, if you want to help, Donate some money to the Main project, $10 to $30 will do, and convince the other 100,000+ participants to donate too,
then maybe they'll have enough money to employ an extra person to fix things the others don't have time too, and to get some more modern and reliable servers,
getting the Astropulse science database on Marvin up seems to be a time consuming job.

Fixing the Stats is more a Jeff or Matt job, But they don't visit here, they only post in the News and Technical News feeds on the Main site, So better to post there,
It could be that the export is running, But it's not working, then it would be better to report it to the Boinc devs.

Hey, guys, you still get credit here on the project, and when the export is fixed all your accumulated credit will appear on the external sites!

Yes, simple acknowledgement of the problem would be nice. But Claggy's right, there are more important things to fix.

Okay baby steps. Why can't we get an admin to give an update?

Seriously, I understand if there is hardware or manpower problem. But neither are a roadblock to a simple status report.

o The current situation is X.
o We are replacing a server necessary for stats export and expect to have it resolved in x weeks. (or) Because of the HW problem, and the lack of funds, are have no timeline for resolution. (or) We will never expert stats again. Crunch or not, based on that information. (or) Sorry folks! The whole staff was transported to the Blue Area of the moon! We are trying to get them back, but expect no exports until then!

See? Simple, takes almost no time to post something like that.

Might be worth mentioning https://icon.ssl.berkeley.edu/instruments/euv/.

EUV - Extreme Ultra Violet Imaging Spectrograph
ICON - Ionospheric Connection Explorer, a NASA spacecraft.

(Hardware, for those whose eyes glaze over at this point)

That's (one of) Eric's day job(s) - it looks like this one has been on the drawing board since 1991, and is due to lift off in 2017. A quarter of a century of dreaming, planning, funding, designing, building. Does that put three months of waiting for numbers to be moved from one web site to another into perspective?
