We're configuring a new upload server that will have more capacity than the current one. (Solid state drives, for example). We're going to test it on beta first, of course, so we'll be down while the transition happens. I expect a day or two.

. . I built a machine especially for Beta (of course it was intended for Parkes data but this is a good excuse too :) )

Its now the 26th. I cannot upload today.

Server Stats show it is up.

What up?
Space, the final frontier.
For us at least. If this thing works, then we might be eaten, or get a chance to roam the universe.

Well, they uploaded.
That is a good sign.

And I got work. Better.

And now I don't.
Probably because several processes are reported "not running" on the Server status page.

Since Beta is a platform for testing specific applications (server-side, or client) then it is best NOT to use the optimised platform unless otherwise instructed.

It all depends on what is being tested - if it is a client side application then it would be a very bad idea as those conducting the test may actually be testing command lines so they can build in a "sensible set" so that "normal" users don't have to worry about them.
Some time ago I was talking to a person running a Beta test - they had to throw out about 50% of the results collected during the test as the users changed parameters away from those being tested so voiding the results. They had to re-run the test, and deliberately not feed data to users that had broken the previous test.

. . But since this time we are testing the upload server it would seem that high volumes are required to test its limits and that will require high productivity on the hosts being used. Hence Anonymous platform ... of course if that is frowned upon then so be it ...

Without knowing what they are looking for from a particular workunit running anything other than the "official" application may lead to wrong decisions being made - stick with what is sent out UNLESS there is an instruction from the test leader to do otherwise. And remember Beta is most certainly not processing "real" data, but duplicate and even dummy data. So, do EXACTLY as the test leader says, nothing more, and nothing less.

. . Exactly why I thought the app might not matter in this case, 'never mind the quality feel the width'. :) Of course, if Parkes data were being tested then absolutely, run it strictly according to Hoyle. But as I said, 'whatever the Doctor orders'.

WRONG - Do Not run anything that the tester does not say you can run.

I think at the moment, the only test which is being run is the hardware test on the upload server - so I might give that a blast sometime.

But once that hardware has passed testing and been deployed at Main, you MUST, MUST, MUST set 'No new tasks', finish and report all downloaded work, and remove any test apps from the client. Don't leave it until a new test is announced - that could happen while you're asleep, on holiday, or just not paying attention. Clean it up immediately.
