Hey All, first post so dont grill me too bad. I thought I'd save some resources on the ever growing validation queue by working some longer units here on the beta project. I installed and read in another thread that the optimized client needed no mods so I installed that and poof! 7 wu's gone!! I have installed the optimized clients in regular seti with no probs, beta didnt seem to like my ways. Now it looks like I've added to the problem by leaving 7 units in limbo waiting for a result from a host that cant even tell the master that I've f'ed the whole thing up. Anyway, My apologies to those stuck waiting for my results that will never come, and to the martisan website maybe a reminder to empty your queue before you install the optimized client.

Sorry, Fish

Quite all right. No apology needed. At least you're using the right version! I've found the optimized application to cut my crunch time by over half, so there's no faulting your desire to use it! :)

I've generated a few of those orphaned WU's from the exact same cause myself. It would be nice to have a feature added to BOINC where such WU's were reported back to the server as abandoned so that they could be sent out to other hosts in a timely manner. One more thing to add to the feature wish list...

Yes, its not like I didnt want to do them or pawn em off on someone else....
a resend and confirm data button would be a great addition

Fish,

I mucked 2 workunits yesterday when attaching to the Beta project for the first time. I'm pretty sure I did everything right, as I've installed optimized clients on the other Seti project numerous times. Despite my precautions though, the new project downloaded two 4.04 workunits anyway and trashed them right off the bat. It happens.

I'm using optimized client 4.02 here David... no worries :)

NO need for worries, the optimized client will more than make up for the loss. Right now I have more (MANY more) pending wus than granted ones. This isn't even mostly due to the validator slow down. It's due to changes in the beta app and limited number of crunchers attached to this project.

It's all fun.

I hope everything is working for the newly attached participants. if not, there's help available, just ask.

I just re'installed the beta, and so far so good. Also installed the optimized client. The computer I'm running the beta on also runs Einsten. The other day when I installed the beta, it wound up messing up some einstein units. I dunno how, and I don't have any logs from it.

Now, I got it installed, right now it says that the beta w/u will complete in about 7 hours, I dunno if thats right either. And even though I put the optimized client in, its still saying the version is 4.04. I'll have to wait and see what happens, but if all works good, I will be happy. I'll keep you all posted.

Jeremy

[edit]
Now the time to complete is growing, we shall see how high it goes, and hopefully I didn't mess it up this time.

Well, now I'm getting this error,

Dunno what happend. I removed the optimized client, and put the regular one back in, but now that the servers are down, I won't know if it worked or not. Would being on an optimized BOINC CC have anything to do with it at all?

Jeremy,

I'm not sure what could be the problem there. I'm using Tetsuji's optimized client 4.27 like I always have in the past, along with his optimized science app 4.02. Everything seems to be working great. BoincView reports initially that a unit will take up to 24 hours to crunch, but then after about 10 hours (50% or so) it startes to drop rapidly and ends up finishing in 14 hours instead.

Just out of curiosity, did you remember to put the app_info.xml file into the Seti Beta directory along with the 4.02 science app? I'm sure you did... just throwing it out there. ;)

Good luck,

Dig

Hey Dig,

Yeah I did. I put both files into the Seti Beta directory, renamed the 4.04 app so that it wouldn't look at it, and then it errored out. I'll have to wait and see what else happens and go from there. Thanks for your help.

Ok... cool. Hope you get it figured out.

I myself just deleted the 4.04 app altogether after installing the optimized app (4.02). Maybe I wasn't supposed to, but I figured it couldn't hurt and it's been working fine. Let us know how you make out. :)

Hmm, maybe I'll try that. Its gonna be a few more hours acording to SETI's front page, I got some shoppin to do, and gotta go file for a lost title for my vehicle, so when I get back things should be running again and I'll be able to do some more messing around and see if I can't get it to work.

I didn't delete anything when I installed the optimized application, I just shut down boinc, copied the new app and app_info file into the beta directory, started boinc and I was off to the races.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to delete the old app. LoL. I was just relaying what I did myself, and not providing any sort of instruction. I hope we can get some more folks over here crunching. I only have one unit that even has another cruncher in it with me, and it's the guy who's using the wrong optimized app. Go figure.

On a lighter note:

Prior to my wife and I going to Michigan to clean the house before putting it in a realtors hands, I set my cache to 10 days.

I didn't change it back after we got back last week, so I now have 29 seti and 23 Seti/beta wu's to crunch during the outage. Yes, 23 beta wus. 23x10 hours = 230 hours or nearly 10 days worth of actual crunching.

I won't be affected by this outage. LOL

oops, I just added in 29 hours of seti(29x1hr=29 hours). Hmmm, 1 day 4 hours plus (23x10:40=246) 246hours (10 days, 6 hours) = 11 days 10 hours.

I've set the NNW button on everything.

But for sit in the fun to try to upload those units... not only the forums are extremely slow, now that all the servers are up& running, my deferral time goes from 29 minutes to 2 hours and more. ;)
