Price advantage or throughput advantage.

If you want to build a farm, there is one set of questions.

If you want to buy a single machine for both home/game use and seti crunching, another set of questions.

And probably getting a single crunching machine yet a third set of questions.

1. What CPU has the highest single physical CPU throughput per day for seti. Intel Pentium 4 - Hyperthreaded. No possible arguments here.
-- (later this summer when dual cores from AMD come out this can be re-visited)

2. If you want a gaming machine that can crunch also, AMD Athlon 64 < of some kind > is probably your best bet.

3. If you want to build a farm, what is your best CPU choice.
-- a. for Upfront costs on a per/cpu basis
-- b. for Space consideration (farm packing density)
-- c. for Long term power consumption (watts/credit)

Yes, well, Intel is going to be doing that too ... so, at the moment I would say that Intel will still get the nod ... until AMD comes up with a HT-like capability.

Well, I used to ... but I found that a Intel HT did EveerQuest quite well even when I was gaming ... :)

Now that is an interesting thing to consider. But instead of getting a P4 3.2 and an AMD 3200+, I think I am going to get a dual Xeon ...

For gaming, nothing Intel has comes close to the AMD offering. Which is interesting because then you look at the Dhrystone/Whetstone graphs the Intel CPUs are miles in front.
Just goes to show just how meaingless some benchmark figures are.

I was on Terris Thule ... I had 3 accounts eventually and used to go out with a set of 3 to adventure since they made solo play so hard ...

My highest was level 51 Iksar Monk ... though he was able to travel through almost every city ... not quite all, their faction accounting had bugs in it so that you could get into traps where you could not fix faction correctly ...

I put it together for around $550

I already had a wireless lan card floating around.

According to the specs, the MB supports up to a 3.06Ghz processor.

Soloing is always hard for melee characters. My 36 Iksar Monk can't solo nearly as well as he used to. My 50 necro, on the other hand...is practically a GOD. :) Druids are just as good.

They have drifted off into an Everquest disscussion. But none of them play on my servers so I have not joined in.

Funny thing is...there are 3 different kinds of AMD Athlon 3000+, each with a different CPU core.

AMD Athlon XP 3000+ - Barton
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - Clawhammer
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ - NewCastle

The two 64s have differing front side busses and L2 cache sizes (because the core is better on one)
