BOINC: SETI@home, Astropulse, CPDN, Predictor@home, etc. etc. An ENORMOUS INTERNATIONAL GIANT always without money and in this moment based on only f-o-u-r pillars of "manpower": Dave, Rom, Matt & Jeff, the Fab Four of Distributed Computing. ;-) [/b][/url] |

I'm glad someone is defending us! The transition of SETI@home to BOINC has been difficult. BOINC is so much more complicated than the original SETI@home, and yet our manpower is very limited (2 people - me and Rom). I felt we had to do the public launch when we did, because the beta test had gone on for so long, and yet there were still lots of problems. We (SETI@home) then had some bad luck with hardware failures. In the last month I've been working on enabling new BOINC-based projects - notably Climateprediction.net - because I think this is the future. Rom, Jeff and Matt have been working long days to keep SETI@home/BOINC going, and they're close to succeeding. I greatly appreciate the support of you, Sir Ulli, and all the other "non-negative" participants. -- David > Thanks David! > > Small question: > this your email is private only > or > do I have your permission of publication > on SETI message boards? > > > Good work to all S@h Berkeley's Staff!!! > > Clear skies. > > Bruno IK2WQA Bruno: It's fine with me if you quote me on the message boards. And please also convey my apology for not participating in the message boards -- if I did I would never sleep! -- David Clear skies from Italy [/b] |

What a very informative E-mail! Dr. Anderson, it's good to hear you give an explanation for the delays and misstarts of this latest launch. Before this I thought only Rom Walton passed out information. That said, doesn't this information belong in the News column of the homepage? I don't think that you need to participate in this forum as it would take up way too much time -- there are, in fact, at least two other forums that discuss SETI/BOINC issues -- but if people could rely upon the News column there would be a lot less complaining about the lack of information here. Dr. Anderson, you must look at these boards (or have some access to what goes on here) since you seem to understand that there is a lot of negative comment. But I'm afraid you are quite mistaken that the so-called S@h Berkeley's Staff Friends Club © are non-negative participants. I have seen some of them taunt, insult, and verbally try to drive away anyone who offers criticism, no matter how constructive. If it's a democratic open forum that is supposed to be provided here, it sometimes fails badly. I guess this post is negative, but you need to hear it. |

@ Bruno Moretti IK2WQA I find it curious that Dr. Anderson can take the time to address you personally, but not address the 40,000 participants; that's assuming that your post is genuine and not a fabrication. If I'm not mistaken, SSL has our e-mail addresses, or he could post any statement or news directly on these boards. Curious indeed. Oh, and one other thing, did any of the Alpha & Beta testers that stuck through the development phase ever receive even a thank you? If he did I never saw it. But here he thanks a group dedicated to applauding him; draw your own conclusions at your own risk. If it is genuine then shame on Dr. Anderson, and if fabricated, shame on you. Account frozen... |

Dear Mr.Andersen I am not surprise to read the following in your email Quote In the last month I've been working on enabling new BOINC-based projects - notably Climateprediction.net - because I think this is the future. Unquote Does it mean that SETI is already in the past ? Sice I have Joined BOINC I have always had the feeling that if everything went so wrong it was because someone wanted CPDN to take over SETI. With all my respect you and your team are missing crucial points in regards to SETI participants. Programming and codes are one thing but public relation is another and I have to say that it's the wourst I have ever seen in a technical project. I believe it would be good for the project if you could step back and have a look at the project from the users side. To be honnest I have doubt about your real intention about SETI and I have said once that if I was the manager of this project and that I would try to get rid of the participant (or move them to CPDN) I would do exactly what you are doing now. The SETI spirit is slowly dying and it's not the fault of the COMPLAINING participants. It's yours. -.-. --.- -.. -..- . - .-.-. -.- --... ...-- |

Great minds think alike or fools never differ. Well, I like and agree with some of the points which you have made. Although you didn't mention him, the one shining lights in all this mess has been Rom. He has taken a lot of precious time to try and inform the group as a whole about technical problems to the best of his ability. However, he alone does not have the authority to speak as the administrator. But this doesn't address that e-mail from Dr. Anderson. Account frozen... |

We're actually very lucky to have him doing some public relations although it's not his job and he doesn't have to do it. Thanks Rom ! -.-. --.- -.. -..- . - .-.-. -.- --... ...-- |

hmm interesting. When some people react to the very aggressive, angry batchering of the seti@home project, which btw has nothing to do at all with any kind of constructive critisism, they are mindless cheerleaders that do not think anything could be better, do not acknowledge the mistakes, possible mistakes or anything. Is it the faul language in endless complaints from people who doesn't seem to think about anything else than themselves and/or want to display themselves as selfproclaimed geniuses who never make mistakes, never have trouble with anything and apparently have God status that we should cheer on, even humbly lick their feet? I think not. Now I've done some speculating about other people's reasons for their actions on this board, just as some of you have done about some others. Is that constructive? Or perhabs an act of stupidity? Call me stupid, 'cuz I'd think the latter. S@h Berkeley's Staff Friends Club © member |
