Rom,

Unfortunately the fix for the KB242161 problem is not freely downloadable from M$ (This is the most annoying part of their "support" system) so I will try to get it from their support team at work tomorrow (I work for an OEM) and will post it on a generally accessible website if this helps resolve the problems.

I'm getting the same problem running XP SP2. Right as BOINC should go to screensaver mode the computer locks up. I went to options settings and previewed the screen saver, that worked fine, when I moved my mouse to get out of the preview, it did, but the computer locked up. I have a P4 3.4 with 1GB of memory on board.

Nope. I and several others have reported the problem on the CPDN boards. It's a BOINC problem, though the science app may be involved.

I posted yesterday about Win98SE BOINC issues:

1. BOINC slowing down the entire system and ceasing to respond when running TWO PROJECTS.

2. The BOINC crash.

On the latter issue, it has happened again and here is the error code:

BOINC_GUI caused an invalid page fault in
module KERNEL32.DLL at 0167:bff88396.

Thanks Byron, After reading the part about the fix not having gone through regression testing, I'm kind of leery about asking anybody to put this on there system at this point in time.

I've downloaded it for future investigation; please don't install this unless you are confident in your abilities to recover the system in case something bad happens.

Byron,
Many thanks - leaning on our account manager can be somewhat of a bore I will apply the update to my machines to see how it goes.

Rom,
Interestingly enought I have two Windows Me boxes (yes I know horrible OS, but someone has to test software on it!!) which at the moment are dedicated to BOINC testing and only one of them shows this problem (prior to the updates advised here).
Before I apply the updates is there anything you would like me to compare on the machines to help identify the problems?

According to the inf's for that hotfix, it'll only update Win98 and Win98SE.

Dr. Anderson is about to checkin a change to BOINC that codes around the issue, when he does I'll be looking over it for the next hour or so. After that, I'll post a new build in the Alpha group.

I don't think this will be a complete fix for the Win98 issues, as I think there is more than one. It'll just be a stepping stone to isolating the next issue.

Rom, another thing about this new version of the BOINC client and W98.

If you start the command line client "boinc_cli.exe" it starts working fine.
If you hit CTRL+C as it is stated in the client window to cancel/resume processing it cancels processing and closes the SETI client.

When I hit CRTL+C again to resume, the SETI client isn't launched and the machine starts bogging immediatly after a few seconds until it comes into a almost dead state.

Nevertheless, if I hit CTRL+ALT+DEL I'm still able to close the boinc_cli and the machine returns to normal.

I tried doing the same in the BOINC_GUI and the same thing happened, as soon as I selected "Run based on preferences" the GUI automatically freezed and the computer starts bogging.

Doh, yes, really I should read the text on screen before I open my mouth ;-)

That is more promising, I will download and test as soon as I get up in the morning.

One step at a time, as with all problem solving. I am sure you will get there in the end!
:)

I think the reason may be that the BOINC based CPDN will not run on
Win98/ME. So no one is running it on Win98/ME and the problem has not surfaced with that project. I tried running CPDN and it wont work, so I don't run CPDN on the Win98 systems I have.

And still a little more info to the 98 problem ...

Choosing "Run always" or "Run based on preferences" after a "Suspend", blocks the GUI and eventually the OS after a few minutes.

If a manual "Update" is made while in "Suspend" mode (with the SETI client closed) it works perfectly. I had 3 WU to report I succeeded by doing it in suspend.

If you try to "Update" while in active mode the GUI also blocks and so on and so on ...

Take care.

Actually, it has been noticed on CPDN. There was a notice on the front page before they were redone prior to public release.

Hey Rom, whatever happened to opening the beta project back up? Wouldn't that have alleviated much of this mess? (less folks having issues)

Rom, I downloaded and installed the HOTFIX offered up by Byron Leigh Hatch. In short.....It didn't work. I noticed no difference on my Win98SE HP Pavillion 8490 desktop.

AT7:24 PM EDT I rebooted after the install of the hotfix 7876_ENU_i86.zip (exe file...242161_98UP) Everything was normal. I signed online (dialup) and opened the "Transfer" page and successfully sent in one result. Then I clicked on "Project" page. I tried to "Update" the project and at that instant my computer slowed down and the boinc tabs and program became "unresponsive".

I wouldn't recommend that anyone else invest their time on trying the "Hotfix".
Is there anything else I can do??

I personally had no problems at all with V3.19
