@betreger: Many decades ago while in university near the northern border I had some Canadian roommates and teammates and I learned their ways. Among other things I learned was all sentences ended with the question eh? I shall be going north tomorrow to watch a rugby match and verify with some of them then, eh? TGIF:) Here we celebrate her by eating Tacos and some other TexMex food! Fredagsmys:) But Saturday -- Saturn's day is not tomorrow. The real name is Lögare day. The day when all gods and people bath and eat candies, lördagsgodis. In Scandinavian countries, Saturday is called lördag, "lørdag," or laurdag, the name being derived from the old word laugr/laug (hence Icelandic name Laugardagur), meaning bath, thus Lördag equates to bath-day. This is due to the Viking practice of bathing on Saturdays. The roots lör, laugar and so forth are cognate to the English word lye, in the sense of detergent. |
