Message 1976765 - Posted: 24 Jan 2019, 16:02:21 UTC - in response to Message 1976741.

Several days ago I was told that after several months the MicroSD card will die running on a Raspberry Pi. I started thinking about the possibility of running a Pi from an SSD drive. Lo and behold! :)

Yes that’s one of the reasons they made the Pi Drive

Now, I just need to collect 3 SSDs and 3 SATA to USB 2.0 adapters... :)

You can use any USB drive. The portable SSD’s or hard disks with a USB cable are ideal. The best sort are ones that come with their own power supply as the Pi doesn’t supply much current via the USB. I haven’t tried them but those portable SSD’s should work well.

I have used the Seagate expansion drives (2 and 3TB with a 3.5 inch HDD inside) with some success. I also have two Pi Drives on a couple of Pi’s. One is used as a proxy server and another as a NFS share drive for the other Pis. Some pics of the Pi Driveshere

Hi Mark,

Well, unfortunately the WD PiDrives are no longer manufactured, at least as far as I can find. They are listed in a few places, but are tagged no longer available. I didn't go, but I saw a link that was titled something about Western Digital closing down their WDLabs division. :( So I guess it's back to my original idea of using a SSD and SATA to USB adapter.

Because the Pi can run from a 16GB MicroSD card, I've been looking for drives no larger than 128GB. Unfortunately most of what I'm finding is unknown brands or name brands that are way over priced. There's this USB drive that looks promising, but as I said, it's a brand I've never heard of and there are no reviews of it. I also found this adapter that looks like it has a short enough cable if I go with a SATA drive instead. I don't want to have several feet of cable hanging off the back of my Pis. ;)

I'm very reluctant to deal with Amazon anymore. My last order from them was sent back or whatever and they sent me a refund. It was the 2 MicroSD cards I needed and where they were coming from probably figured it wasn't worth it to sell them and ship them to me. I even went beyond the free shipping and paid for it. I always try to buy stuff that is sold and shipped by Newegg or Amazon, but sometimes it won't work out that way. Maybe I'll look to see what Amazon has...

Have a great day! :)

Youn could go for something like this $24 PNY 120GB and a $12external case for it.

Hi Brent,

For one thing, it's refurbished. I do not buy refurbished anything. One can never tell what was wrong with it and what might be missing from the package after refurbishment. Ever hear of Fry's Electronics. They would sell refurbished and I was unlucky enough to have 3 bad experiences from them. Whenever I went there to buy I made doubly sure I was buying brand new. Fry's would take returned items, re-shrinkwrap them and put a sticker on them. I looked for that sticker each time from then on. One of the items had something missing and all 3 would not work. They were Intel motherboards. Late 90s, early 2000s.

Another thing, it's PNY. For some reason I have been staying away from anything PNY. I cannot remember what, but something has steered me away from them for quite a while. But, if I have a choice between PNY and unknown brands, I would pick PNY, IF I had no other choice.

And, no review...

Maybe I'll check out new ones and see if they have reviews.

Have a great day! :)

Siran

[edit]
Brent, I forgot to mention about the case. That's a good idea! :) It would eliminate the cable adapter. Thanks! :)

Ahh, Local settings are under the Network tab.
Write to disk at most every xxx seconds.

Depends on what version of BOINC you are using. On mine that is on the Disk and Memory Usage in the Local Preferences. As you know where things are in the menus in the Manager has moved around a lot in the past and lately. Since I didn't bother checking which version he was running, I mentioned the place that has always had it in the same location.

I have never had any issues with either Amazon or Newegg. Some of the items Amazon sells are so low priced that they are not orderable on a Amazon free shipping account without bundling them with something else of higher cost to include with the order to justify free shipping.

Any of the new 128GB quad bit, 96 layer drives are only $20 now. All have similar specs and are brand new.

Hi Keith,

I didn't see the Kingston one. I did see many of the others. I've used Kingston in the past. Thanks!

Still gotta us an adapter though. ;) No problem. Or a SATA to USB case... :) One thing though, I would like to be able to have the drives in the stack under each Pi. Perhaps the adapter would be the better choice...

Have a great day! :)

I have an old Acorn USB-SSD housing that provides auxiliary +5V power on an addition wall wart besides the USB 3.0 plug.

Amazon has several options

Greetings,

My camera battery is no longer holding an adequate charge; camera is 10+ years old. I ordered 2 new batteries from Amazon.

So, I decided to order a SSD and adapter for one of my Pis. I ordered them on Wednesday 1/30 and they have yet to ship. Amazon has already charged me for them, but they have not shipped them yet. I'm getting rather perturbed with dealing with Amazon. My last order was sent back and Amazon refunded me. That order was supposed to be sold and shipped by an outside company. I checked my current order and all items are "being shipped" by Amazon, even though some are sold buy another company. Since it's the weekend, and I'm supposed to get the order on Tuesday 2/5, they better send it by some dude with a jet pack and an unlimited supply of fuel. ;)

If I could get everything I need or want from Newegg, they would be my sole supply source. ;)

Have a great day! :)

Ah, the you aren't a prime member shipping! It most likely means they are supposed to be in a local to you warehouse, but they aren't going to send them so you get them early. It also likely means they are coming via AMZL (Amazon Logistics) which has no outside tracking. Let us know if my guess is right.

I suspect you are right on the money with your guess, Gary. I have no issues with Amazon at all. Prime Member makes all the difference. I always get multiple updates on an order. When it is picked from stock, when it is shipped, every transit handoff point to my final delivery notice. Two days guaranteed or less every time if an item is in stock when I order. Love Amazon.

Hi Keith,

I usually get notices even not being a Prime member. The only notice I got this time was the order confirmation. I didn't even get one when they charged me for the stuff. They have my money, I had BETTER get my stuff! Just because people don't go Prime does not mean they can treat them this way.

Thing is, I don't go for the free shipping even when it's not Prime; I pay to have it shipped. That should be taken into account, but I guess not.

Also, I'm on a fixed income and cannot logically see a reason to pay $12.99 per month if I'm only ordering 3 or 4 times a year. That would be a waste of money. They make money and I'm not getting anything in return for the months I don't order something. I think Newegg has something similar to Prime and I don't have a problem with them when I order stuff.

I'll post something here if and when there's a change in the situation.

Have a great day! :)

Yes, if you only order a couple times a year and don't use Prime Video streaming, it probably isn't worth it. Amazon saves me hundreds of dollars every year from shipping charges since I order half a dozen times a month. I also enjoy the Prime Video shows and music.

Hi Keith,

Yeah, if I ordered from Amazon as often as you do, I would go Prime too. Heck, if I ordered something every month I would consider it too.

Ok. I just finished chatting with Amazon. And I got a transcript of the chat session too coming in email. Anyway, there was no definitive reason why they haven't shipped yet. They've had my money for 3 days, they should have shipped. They're going to refund the shipping charges I paid and have assured me the stuff will ship today. I'll see it on Tuesday. :)

Have a great day! :)

Greetings,

From the transcript of the chat I had with Amazon yesterday:
12:45 PM PST Sharayu: You will surely have the shipping details by the end of the day today Rick. Rest assured:)
I have yet to see any indication that my order was shipped. I did not receive the "shipping details" by the end of the day yesterday.

This looks like the last time I am going to order anything from Amazon, unless it is absolutely, positively necessary to do so because no one else has what I need to buy. They have lost a customer. They should not be treating their customers this way.

Oh and there was something else that person told me they did:
12:36 PM PST Sharayu: I have looked into the mater and in this case, I could see that you have selected the standard shipping as the shipping speed. In this case, the item needs 3-5 business days for the item to gets shipped
No! The shipping selection page says delivered in 3-5 business day. I will GET the stuff in 3-5 business days. Which was why the estimated delivery date was for tomorrow, 5 business day from last Wednesday.

But please do not worry, I could see that the package has entered early shipping stage and will be shipped by the end of the day
12:37 PM PST Sharayu: Also, I have expedited your shipping so that you receive the package on high priority Rick
The package is in "early shipping stage" and the person expedited the shipping and it will come on "high priority"?

I almost didn't select to get the transcript, but I am so glad I did.

We'll see if I still get it tomorrow... :|

Have a great day! :)

Greetings,

The stuff has shipped! :)

It left Kenosha, Wisconsin just after 7am this morning. I could have driven there, picked up my stuff and driven back home in less than a day, they're that close to me. It might have been a 12 hour round trip. Oh well, at least my stuff is shipped.

Have a great day! :)

Greetings,

Got my stuff today. SSD got formatted to NTFS and would not work on the Pi to install Linux. Windows 10 won't format in Fat32 and I don't know what exFat is. Got a little utility that formats in Fat32. Formatted the SSD, copied all the installation files over to it and installed Linux. The Pi is running off the SSD and no MicroSD card anywhere near it. Woohoo! :)

Tomorrow I will make the config file mods and get BOINC running. Right now I have to use HDMI and my wireless mouse and keyboard. I gave the SSD the same name as the Pi. Cool huh? :)

Gotta go, have a great day! :)

There is FAT8, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and exFat which just consider as FAT64. All flash drives larger than 32Gb will come formatted exFat today. For Linux you might need to D/L drivers for exFat, native on Mac and Doze.

Greetings,

I now have remote access to my Pi with the SSD (gotta make note that xrdp needs to be installed first). I have BOINC installed and the Pi picked up right where it left off. That is so cool! :)

Something that caught my attention is that the Pi takes somewhat longer to boot from the SSD. I'm thinking that because it is designed to run from a MicroSD card that it looks for it first and doesn't find it so then looks for the SSD. Correct me if I'm wrong on this assessment.

@Gary - Yeah, I figured that out and I got a little utility that formats in Fat32. Thanks for the info though. :) I Googled the issue and I saw that exFat was mentioned in a forum. Nothing was said about formatting in exFat so I chose a link to a Fat32 formatter.

Have a great day! :)

Greetings,

I must invest into another UPS, this one for my Pis. We just had a brownout and Pi #1 could not recover. Pis 2 and 3 had no problem recovering.

The boot process on Pi #1 is considerably slower than the other 2. I believe that booting from the SSD has something to do with it. Will have to check into it...

Have a great day! :)

Speaking of such things, UPS that is, is there a solution where a single UPS running several computers can tell all of them, I'm about to shut down now so that all the computers can do a quick controlled shutdown?
