A very interesting article from Phoronix, where they compare the original Zen 1 EPYC server CPU Naples with the latest and greatest Genoa CPUs. The improvements in performance are quite astounding. Grant Darwin NT |

Looking forward later this year to the resurgence of AMD HEDT platform with Zen 4 "Siena" cpus. AMD 8000 processors with 32c/64t or 64c/128t configurations using the Zen 4c core. Packages and sockets will have the same footprint as SP3 sockets with a slightly higher pin count per socket. Socket is SP6/TR6. Cpus will consist of 4 CCX dies and an I/O die with the CCX's containing 16 Zen 4c cores. L3 caches will be half of Zen 4 cores. Same 96 PCIE Gen5 lanes as Zen 4. Hilarious!... One to watch out for when using an AMD motherboard/mainboard?... Follow the standards/specs, or... Really? How many USBs?... LTT - How Many USBs Can You Plug In At Once? All a good fun surprise... Enjoy! Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

The benchmarks are out in force for the new Zen4 Threadrippers. They are, quite simply, absolute beasts when it comes to applications that can take advantage of all their cores & threads. And their efficiency is quite remarkable considering just how much work they can do per Watt of power used. Finally got there. After a calamitous week, forced into putting my new build together. Win7 rig had too many M/B issues. Completed build Fri night & retired for the night. Yesterday morning, attempted to set up O/S. Only problem was that bios had no boot options showing even though it recognised both the HD & optical drive. Spent quite some time trying to resolve it but no joy, so left it until today & googled issue. Found numerous threads on various forums, but most related to usb connections. However at the tail end of 1 thread it was mentioned to check on CMS & make sure it was enabled. Did so & rebooted. Job done. installed Mint 23, no problems. Downloaded Boinc & nice to see something never before on any of my past rigs. 10 tasks running at once & the time taken to complete a coule of hours compared to 13/14 hours. Vey nice. Thanks. No issues experiencing with installation, unlike previous rig. It looks like it's doing 40 tasks a day compared to my previous 6/7. Just 1 question for Ryzen users, would running all 12 cores with 64gb ram impact the rig? Edit. Crunching NumberFields@home atm. |

Question for Ryzen users running Windows & Linux on the same rig. Had many an issue with dual booting in the past so installed each O/S on separate drives & used bios to switch between them. However got fed up with this some time ago until Wiggo made a post in the Computers & Technology thread. He used the F12, that worked great for me so tried using that on the new rig. Sadly F12 does not work on Asus ROG Strix B550-F rig. Checking through bios couldn't find any option for F12. Ideas anyone as I feel I'm missing something. Did experience some annoying issues with both O/S's, 1: Windows kept opening up the help page continuously after closing brower & click on any app icon to run them. Had to boot into Linux & browse for a solution. Finally found several but many did not work. However 1 did so tried that. Success, it worked & on many reboots since them, it no longer occurred.. 2: On Linux the same issue but with the Desktop User Guide & no matter what I try it fails, so googled it. Found a lot of answers but none work so far. On the plus side, ran Boinc on the Linux rig as a test & After a week of testing, it completed 439 tasks for a credit total of 202,000. Nice. Now started testing Boince under Win 11. |

... Checking through bios couldn't find any option for F12. Are you suffering the 'super-security' of UEFI + Windows?... You may well need to look up changing some BIOS settings to allow you to select or change the boot order. Or to disable "secure boot" even, to then be able to see a boot select menu...? Good luck? Or to disable "secure boot" even, to then be able to see a boot select menu...?I havn't dealt with any of the latest hardware about, but this setting use to be the culprit and in some cases hard to find. You may have to enable the slow boot option to find it. Cheers. |

Thanks guys, much appreciated @Martin & Wiggo, Secure Boot not set. Don't like M$ telling me what I should do on my own rig. @Mike, Thanks will try F8 after running the wu test on Win11. Over the last couple of days, have found that win11 really hates having no net access. :) |

Ryzen 5 CPUs have been out for a while. Gamers were disappointed in their performance compared to the previous generation, but for general productivity, computing, transcoding, database & other types of work, they have been excellent with significant increases in performance and power efficiency. Now the 3D cache CPUs have been released, and the gamers are losing their minds- they kill all existing Intel CPUs when it comes to gaming. And for other general computing Tasks that are cache sensitive, the performance boost for some of those most affected is likewise huge, on top of the already significant boost the initial release Ryzen 5 series gave.
