Boinc cannot "see" more 4096 MB. Too bad because I'm running a GTX 1080 Ti FTW3 and an RTX 2080 Ti Ultra Hybrid. |

Greetings, I was wondering about that very thing, graphics memory. Is there a specific reason that BOINC only sees 4GB of my 6GB 1660Ti card? It’s a limitation in BOINC. The code is only 32-bit and can only count up to 4096. It affects everyone. So there is nothing wrong with your setup. Seti@Home classic workunits: 29,492 CPU time: 134,419 hours ![]() ![]() |

I picked up an EVGA GTX 1660 XC ultra a couple weeks ago. Not using it for seti at the moment, but i'll probably use it for WOW. It's currently in my Plex transcode server that I put together for GPU transcoding since the 1660 is the lowest end GPU you can currently get that comes with the Turing NVENC chip in it. Is it the GPU detection function that runs in 32bit mode only? The reason I ask, besides just knowing more stuff, is that BOINC detects that I have 16GB of RAM on this PC. Or, does it have something to do with video cards in particular? I'm starting to see a faded, vague memory... ;) Perhaps it's something I may have read some time ago? :\ Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? I again Ian, Do you mean WoW as in World of Warcraft? :) I upgraded from a GTX 1050Ti to the 1660Ti and the latter works extremely well in WoW. I play WoW, now, even while BOINC is busy working on WUs. I suspended BOINC when running with the 1050Ti; way too much lag in WoW. Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Ok, now I'm really confused. ;)I refer the honorable gentleman to the answer I gave some weeks ago (the last time this question came up, AFAIK): Message 1988032 |

I picked up an EVGA GTX 1660 XC ultra a couple weeks ago. Not using it for seti at the moment, but i'll probably use it for WOW. no, i mean WOW as in the SETI WOW contest that comes up every summer. I'm using the card for real-time video conversion (resolution, codec, etc) on my Plex media server, not video games. It's not even running an OS with a desktop, CLI only, Ubuntu Server 18.04. For instance, playing a 1080p file to a 720p tv, the video needs to be converted. or playing a 1080 file from an unsupported codec and converting it to a supported one if the client needs it. NVENC/NVDEC isn't new, it's been around for several years. but only recently with the Turing architecture, did the quality and file size efficiency really start to compete with CPU alternatives, and the Turing chip added some new capabilities with supported codecs and resolutions. My main Plex server is all CPU based, using 2x 10-core Xeon CPUs to do heavy lifting when a transcode is requested. It can handle 2 or 3 simultaneous 4K transcodes, but uses 3-400 W of power to do it. the new server using the GPU for decoding/encoding can handle 9 or 10 4K transcodes, and only uses about 100-150w doing it. Hi Ian, no, i mean WOW as in the SETI WOW contest that comes up every summer. Ah, my bad! I forgot about that WOW. Thanks! :) Have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? "What a piece of junk!" - L. Ok, now I'm really confused. ;)I refer the honorable gentleman to the answer I gave some weeks ago (the last time this question came up, AFAIK): Hi Richard, Ahh yes. That was the "faded, vague memory" that was emerging from the depths. I do have a hard time remembering stuff anymore. Age tends to do that, but then, my memory has never been all that good anyway. When people say they have an eidetic or photographic memory I envy them. ;) Sooner or later I'll remember this, I hope. ;) Thanks Richard and have a great day! :) Siran CAPT Siran d'Vel'nahr - L L & P _\\// Winders 11 OS? I couldn’t get the EVGA cards I was after, nobody seems to be selling that model in Australia. I ended up getting a couple of ASUS dual slot cards. I then went through some pain with the drivers in Debian. After they fixed that I have them running in a couple of machines, generally overnight. Wattage is a little higher than the GTX1060’s they replaced. Task run times have dropped from 160 sec on the 1060 to 102 sec on the GTX 1660 Ti. Not many projects support Turing based cards yet. Still waiting on Asteroids and GPUgrid to update their apps. Haven’t tried Einstein but their GPU apps are OpenCL so probably will work. BOINC blog |
