I was handed the above GPU as a gift a few months ago and came across it today. Trying to find a use for it my thoughts settled on my lowly web server in a dell gx990 with an i7-2700K and 32GB of ram. I thought why not put the mostly idle computer to good use for Seti@home? This should fit as it is a half height card and my motherboard has one PCIe x16 slot. I will have to look at the power supply. Not having any experience with GPU’s and Seti@home I ask the questions. 1. Is this a good card for crunching tasks? 2. Are there better half-height cards for the task? 3. What sort of optimizations will I have to make to get the best bang per watt? Thanks in advance for any help offered. Radjin~ |

I am running Linux. The card says 75w and suggest a 300W PSU. I am having a hard time finding a true 300W unit that will fit the DT case. It currently has 250W. I also have never successfully set up BOINC on Linux; either received compute errors or no permission to command boinccmd. Radjin~ |

I am running Linux. The card says 75w and suggest a 300W PSU. I am having a hard time finding a true 300W unit that will fit the DT case. It currently has 250W.A good 250W PSU may be good enough, depending on your CPU, amount & speed of RAM, storage (HDD or SSD?) and motherboard chipset. Under LINUX running the stock application the actual power draw would most likely be around 60W peak, 50W average. Running the special application the average load would be around 70W, peaks to it's maximum rating. You can use software to set the maximum power draw of the card. Grant Darwin NT |

i7-2700K CPU 95W Chipset Q67 15-30W* 4*8GB DDR3 1333MHz 16W 2*1TB SSD 8W * the chipset itself is rated for 6.1W, but with support components and other functions on the motherboard the motherboard power requirements could be anything from 15W-30W (as much as 60W if it is a high-end motherboard). Addon the 75W for the video card and you'd be looking at around 225W absolute maximum, so the actual load even with crunching would be around 200W (most likely less). Which is roughly 80% of a 250W PSU rated capacity, and that's only slightly more than the 75% of maximum rated load sweet spot for a sustained load on a PSU. If it all fits, and the system cooling is up to the job, it looks good. Grant Darwin NT |

I find the standard Linux BOINC installation infuriating to work with so I avoid it if at all possible. My solution along with many others is to use a BOINC installation that installs into your /home directory so you always have permission to whatever you want with it. We call it the TBar AIO (All-in-One) installer. It is nothing more than a 7z package of BOINC 7.14.2 and the best Linux applications for cpu and Nvidia gpus. The CUDA9 and CUDA10.1 applications are 3-5X faster than the stock applications. All you do is unpack the package in your home folder somewhere and double-click the boincmgr file to start the client and the Manager. If it doesn't start, check for missing dependencies. It runs on Linux from versions 12.04 to 19.04. You can add the GPU(s) later or at anytime, even if you have already installed and have been running BOINC. Just install the hardware, load drivers and reboot if needed, start BOINC, and it should recognize and begin using the GPU no problem. What Linux distro are you running? Dependencies can become a real headache with some of the exotic or stripped-down distros. |

Still can control everything with boinccmd. You don't need the Manager to be running. The most common missing dependency is libcurl4 for the client which is sometimes tied into libcrypto. Had to install 7zip; downloaded, moved and decompressed into: /home/BOINC Ran ldd and got the same output as the previous message. Now I am getting out of normal zone. I have always installed via the apt command so have a few questions: 1. How do I install the two missing libraries? 2. How do I run boinccmd? Sorry for the noob questions? Radjin~ |

Had to install 7zip; downloaded, moved and decompressed into: /home/BOINC Should pick up the libssl and libcrypto through curl4. It's possible that libcrypto is not tied to the normal curl4 or openssl on your distro like it is in Ubuntu.
