Apparently you still have parts of the Repository version of BOINC installed. There isn't a boinccmd in usr/bin with the Berkeley version, boinccmd is in the BOINC folder, along with everything else in the BOINC-All-in-One. To use the BOINC-All-In-One you cd to the BOINC folder, then run ./boinccmd...works for me. You need to remove ALL parts of the Repository version of BOINC, then the Berkeley version will work. Or reinstall the System and Never install the Repository version of BOINC. The older instructions for the Berkeley version is here, https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Installing_BOINC#The_Berkeley_Installer
The BOINC working directory can be moved elsewhere as you like, and can even be renamed. One common choice is ~/.boinc, since files and directories with names that begin with "dot" do not show up by default in Unix directory listings. Whatever the name, everything related to the BOINC client is contained within that directory, and you should always run the client and the manager from that working directory...
BTW, if you want to use the run_client & run_manager files you will need to open them and set the correct paths to the exes.

Are you sure the boinc client is running on another terminal?

I find no trace of it running anywhere.

As I had said in the beginning I tried to install Boinc using apt but never got it working. I did an apt removed, purge and autoremove. Later in this topic I received the to idea to DL and run from my home directory but that has not worked either. If I understand what is being said, there is either another instance of Boinc running or some configuration that is redirecting my command. I thought I had purged all parts of it from the apt install. My knowledge of Linux is growing but I am way out of my depth on this topic.

1. How do I detect the possible other Boinc instance?
2. How do I remove it if apt did not?
3. How do I remove leftover parts of the repository version of Boinc?

You are getting that because there are configuration files from the Repository boinc telling the system boinc is in your system folder instead of your Home folder. You must remove All traces of the Repository boinc, including configurations files from your system, otherwise every time you FAIL to CD to the BOINC folder the system will assume you mean the Repository version of boinc in your system folder. Most people using the GUI just open /home/user/BOINC and double-click on boincmgr, which runs boinc from the Working directory, as per the instructions at Berkeley.

This is a headless unit, everything is command line.
I have done all these commands from the BOINC directory.

How do I find the repository files that need to be removed?

Yes, and as you saw, you MUST cd to the BOINC folder, as per instructions, before trying to run the Berkeley version of boinc. The only way I know of to completely remove the Repository Configuration files is to use the Package Manager and choose the Option for 'Remove Completely, Including Configuration files'. Since you can't do that Now, you are going to be forever Haunted by those Repository Configuration files, unless you do a clean install, and Never install the Repository version of BOINC.

./ means run
Try using ./boinccmd and then the command. Remember, your system thinks you mean the boinccmd that isn't in usr/bin instead of the one in your home folder.

why do you keep running boinccmd? that is not a program installed on the system as a service and will not run like that. that's why you keep getting the command not found error.

you need to always be using ./ in front of the executable name, whether it be boinc, boincmgr, or boinccmd. so ./boinc, ./boinccmd ./boincmgr, etc

./boinccmd --lookup_account http://setiathome.berkeley.edu [your email for seti acccount] [yourpassword to Seti@Home]

*without []brackets, don't copy paste your password on the forums.

It will return something like this.
status: Success
poll status: operation in progress
poll status: operation in progress
Account key: 7jj32038czaAajAf

Use the account key to join a computer.

./boinccmd --project_attach http://setiathome.berkeley.edu 7jj32038czaAajAf

substitute the alphanumeric with whatever the lookup command gives you. the 7jj32038czaAajAf is just an example
