Hi all So does anyone know what will happen after 31st March, once SETI@home stops issuing tasks? WIll it be a "slow" shutdown so that any tasks that are still "pending" validation will still be available to download and become validated later on? Or will it be a "fast" shutdown and any pending tasks will never be validated as any further downloading of these tasks will never happen? I ask as I have over 4,600 "pending tasks" and it would be nice to think that all of these will eventually be validated by "wingmen" - but if some tasks are aborted or are never completed, then some "pending" tasks may never returned and be credited. And it would be nice to know in advance what the plan is? regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum |

It would be nice, but no announcement yet. Anything you read on this board is speculation and wishful thinking. We'll all find out next Wednesday. |

It would be nice, but no announcement yet. Anything you read on this board is speculation and wishful thinking. Quite understand. Just asking the question with the hope that an admin can answer as I think all active members would be interested to know. Personally, I would hope that they would just stop issuing "new" tasks and that any that remain are in the system will continue to be available until thay are all returned successfully at least twice - which will mean that every issued task will be validated and credited. And those that are either aborted or past their deadline will continue to be re-issued...and eventually none will be left. The alternative would be that they just shut down the server and that's it. We'll all find out next Wednesday. Or maybe not. It just depends on if someone makes an announcement and when. regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum |

Right now, there are 52 tasks in my queue. I have to ask, when SETI@Home goes away as of March 31, what will happen to those tasks? Although no new tasks will be sent, will the ones already in peoples' queues be allowed to finish or will they just be aborted and gone? Just wondering. Steven Gaber Oldsmar, Florida |

If you read through the threads, this question has been asked several times. The straight answers is no one knows. The project has stated that the website and forums will stay up, but beyond that there has been no official comment |

Right now, there are 52 tasks in my queue. Hi I asked the same question here: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85393 My guess is that they will just stop creating and sending *new* tasks...but those still on peoples computers (hopefully) will be allowed to be uploaded once completed...as just shutting down the upload servers makes no sense at all if people are still crunching the numbers. And those tasks that are in the re-send queue, may still become available so that the pending validation queue can (eventually) be shrunk to zero when the quorum for each task is reached. But that's all my guesswork. So fingers crossed eh? regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum |

Surely this from their hibernation announcement answers the question? On March 31, the volunteer computing part of SETI@home will stop distributing work and will go into hibernation. Seems to me they'll just turn off the taps on new WUs & let the system run dry of it's own accord, unless they add further posts to the contrary! Well, you can highlight it also like that: On March 31, the volunteer computing part of SETI@home will stop distributing work AND will go into hibernation. But I don't think they will stop creating new work and accepting the results exactly at the same time, that would be the worst way to do it. |

It's simple, they just stop to load new tapes. Then the end will be like the universe end in a cold & darkness eternity. |

So we agree then ;) (unless they give out different info later of course) Team AnandTech - SETI@H, Muon1 DPAD, F@H, MW@H, A@H, LHC@H, POGS, R@H, DHEP@H. HI all I think we can all agree that the original "hibernation" message was not specific enough and has left questions to be answered in terms of which parts will stop, which parts will continue (other than the website and this messageboard). "stop distributing work" - all work? only new work? which please? "go into hibernation" - which parts? validator? upload server? download server? (for "old" tasks in the re-send queue) One hopes we will find out very soon...as we really should have been advised in the original message. regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum |

I'm running with no new units going out to clients and all existing tasks are sent back/maybe some are sent out to existing clients already crunching to finish them off Historian for the Defunct Riviera Hotel and Casino, Former Classic Seti@home user for Team Art Bell. Well, as I thought, they're shutting off the WU supply, nothing else yet - https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85412 So we can keep sending in our results :). Hi all Eric K has responded here: https://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=85412&postid=2042009 As promised, we've stopped the process that puts new data into the queue today. Data distribution will continue until the files shown on the status pages are done. We'll be accepting results and resending results that didn't validate for a while. So, no new work as from now Resends will still be available (until they run out) Uploads will continue to accepted It's probably the best set of options in the circumstances. :-) So, time to crunch through the caches and hope for some resends ;-) regards, Tim Founder, UK BOINC Team Join us @ UK BOINC Team: http://www.ukboincteam.org.uk/newforum |

Yep :), although I'll leave the resends for you guys, once the caches are drained I'll be switching to Rosetta. My caches seem quite well stocked actually, I think, err well I have 153 in progress, no idea how long that will last my 2 rigs :o, a couple of days?? Yep :), although I'll leave the resends for you guys, once the caches are drained I'll be switching to Rosetta. Why you not try something a little different? Reschedule all the seti to the GPU, set your preferences to accept GPU WU only in seti, and release all the CPU for Rosetta. By doing this you continue to do all the seti work your host could receive while help the Rosetta with their searches. Anyway our GPU's are useless on Rosetta. Just a suggestion of course. |

Because my GPU is crunching folding@home on this rig :), on the other it is crunching SETI atm. Btw, aren't you forgetting that the WU taps have been turned off? ;) (bar resends), which I must have got some as I'm up to 158 WUs in progress now!
