And so it probably should be. The BOINC (user) account is a high-security account, which - most importantly - can run BOINC in BOINC's own sandboxed work area, but is not allowed to escape and wreak havoc in the rest of the machine. What you should do is to add your own user account to the boinc group (not account). That should give you enough access to perform day-to-day management, without breaking BOINC's own security. Last modified: 21 Oct 2020, 16:43:25 UTC BOINC would normally (starting from a clean installation) have ~~two~~ three (see edit) directories: A program directory, where the executable files live, but very little else. A data directory, where all read-write operations would happen - including cc_config.xml, but very much not limited to that. More follows - excuse me while I switch machines... ... with my KVM now pointing to my Linux (Mint) machine, I can paste: Executables - /usr/bin (usually your system drive) BOINC's own data - /var/lib/boinc-client User-editable configuration files - /etc/boinc-client The important and busy one - that you're trying to relocate - is the middle of those three. As well as the dynamic data, it contains symlinks to the configuration files, so BOINC itself can find and use them. The launcher (script or systemd) would need to tell the programs to load from /usr/bin or your local equivalent, but use /var/lib/boinc-client or your local equivalent as the working directory. All those directories look correct with their locations and permissions. I'm totally lost where you are currently at with all the extraneous information you have posted. Have you simply tried?: sudo systemctl start boinc-client and posted what is displayed in the terminal? You have obviously successfully run the client at some time or all those directories you listed would not have been created. The main point of this exercise is simply to get the client started, running and asking for work from the projects you have attached and start running tasks. You can worry about the Manager at a later time once we can see the client running. The Manager can't show anything or attach to the client if the client isn't running. Get the client running first. And with all the software changes and permutations you've gone through, you probably have some software conflict going on. make life easy on yourself and just wipe the drive and start from a clean slate. reinstall Ubuntu and keep nothing from the old install. a few basic questions. are you running the server (command line only) version of Ubuntu 20.04? or are you running the desktop install with the GUI? how are you installing boinc, and which version are you installing? what is your exact hardware config (motherboard, CPU, GPUs, etc)? are you dead set on having boinc run as a service? are you open to a standalone install?
