Yes, I agree. From the point of the takeover, it will likely go downhill. How fast though, is still to be seen.

Probably depends whether the existing, experienced, staff move with WCG, or stay with nice safe IBM - meaning a whole new crew have to learn the idiosyncrasies of a not-very-well documented system.

It'll be our job to teach them how it really works, then - warts and all.

A few new tasks are just starting to flow, but still no explanation from the powers-that-be.

I am getting mostly Mapping Cancer Markers tasks, which is a Krembil project.

Doesn't seem to be any problems with OPN1 tasks. Got 120 yesterday afternoon.

After getting loads of MappingCancerMarkers and a few AfricaRainfall, I am getting some OPN1. But no OPNG.

I've received and processed 2 1/2 pages of OPNG tasks today. 5 1/2 pages yesterday.
The tasks are available if you ask for them regularly.

At the best of times I find it hard to get GPU work (OPNG) I find it impossible to get GPU work without having CPU work selected. I gather this is because the project doesn't request work is regularly if I am not also processing CPU work

Nope, it's most likely because years ago the Scheduler got broken with an update around Christmas time & it was never fixed.
Prior to that breaking of the Scheduler, you could select AP or MB & opt to do the other only if there was none of your preferred type. And it worked. After the update, people started posting about not being able to get work, even when work was available.
Remember having to do the triple update here at Set to get work? That was the only work around to get work, other than just selecting to do all types of work (which is what everyone ended up doing).

The shutdown (temporary) of WCG is bringing back memories of when seti went down. I've got a good hoard of WUs (only what I can run on my slow machine in time, so not that many), but I'm sure the admins will run some of the same tactics that seti did and send out multiple copies even before the return date. I'm so close to earning my year badge in ARP.

I'm not sure if I will run another project in the time between. I probably should, as this could take longer than 2 months as the message they sent out sounds like they were rushed by a deadline to do this the hard way. I'll check other posts for possibilities, but if you have a team on another project that an old mac could run, send me a message.

WCG is still taking in processed WUs, and should til the end of february. In the meantime I'm contributing to Einstein@home, and if you can't say no to an incoming gravity wave (like most of us can't) it really should become a groovy backup project of yours. I'm not sure about the old Mac compatibility thing, though.

I'm still getting a few WUs from WCG, but they are sending out resends to many people at a time, so it should be done soon.

I set up boinc to do Milkyway WUs, but then it went down (I think they lost a hard drive??), so I'll check on einstein today to see if my machine can handle it.

most of the boinc projects are scientists trying to do research, but also having to do all the computer maintenance etc. There never seems to be enough money to have up to date hardware and a dedicated computer person.

I really liked the concept of WCG and I can't understand why IBM gave up on the idea. I miss Seti, and now I miss WCG. I'm worried you are right about WCG not lasting. Even if it does work for a while, it won't be the same.

Got my first Open Pandemics-Covid-19 tasks from Krembil.

I ran through about a dozen tasks over last few days, most of them on my Android devices. So far everything seems to validate ok.

WCG IS STILL BUGGY and they admit it's still a long way towards being "100%".

Dear volunteers,

Over the past week, we entered a new stage of our testing phase where we gave a few work units to our volunteers to crunch. The goal was to see if any unforeseen errors occurred, which we were able to find thanks to the feedback of our volunteers. For specific questions you may have on the limited work units, check this thread on our forums.

Here’s a quick update from our tech team:

We have been working to assess how well the system responds to load and whether configuration is correct. As many have noted on the forums, there are some issues with the BOINC backend configuration. Users will have noticed off-putting notices in the BOINC manager about incorrect project URLs and attaching twice to the same project. We are aware of these issues and nearing a resolution.

In addition, we are working to resolve the lack of synchronization between the website profile page and the BOINC manager. We are also working to fix a blocking issue with the GPU work units for Open Pandemics. Once this is resolved, we should be able to increase the quantity of work units we can send out to volunteers.

Our backlog of non-blocking issues has continued to grow as we observe load on the system, but overall we are nearing a stable state of affairs and look forward to updating users with statistics and more details as we continue the roll out of our production system.
