Iceland is erupting again. . This one gave notice and city was evacuated before the eruption. Lava flows are away from city, the blue lagoon, and other improvements. So-called "witch's hair" has been reported drifting in the wind. These are fine glass fibers formed when lava droplets cool rapidly and stretch. They are very light and can travel long distances. Witch's hair can cause skin and eye irritation, and people are advised to take precautions when outdoors near the eruption site.Source: Icelandic Met Office |

Yesterday (3rd December 2025) the north west of England had a "large" (well, by UK standards) earthquake. At 23:23 parts of The Lake District and neighbouring areas were shaken by a 3.3 earthquake. No reports of serious damage or injury. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cgjn8wg53q7o Bob Smith Member of Seti PIPPS (Pluto is a Planet Protest Society) Somewhere in the (un)known Universe? |

Since last year's July 17th eruption on the Reykjanes peninsula there's a constant accumulation of magma in a magma chamber deep beneath the surface and a continuous ground uplift which is monitored with precision differential GPS measurements. The amount of accumulated magma already exceeds those from all previous eruption cycles since the Reykjanes fires restarted few years ago: Diagram of accumulated magma beneath surface and previous eruption events discharging the magma reservoirs: [Source: Icelandic Met Office; larger image linked]...and nobody knows when the next eruption will commence and whether prepared dikes that protect the town of Grindavik will be sufficient. |
